Stars and Stripes is reporting that the union who represents the employees working for the Department of Veterans Affairs has filed a grievance over the agency’s decision to go smoke free.
VA hospitals in states such as South Dakota moved to banning all forms of tobacco and vaping products at their facilities earlier this year.
Today, the VA announced that the new nationwide smoke free policy would apply to everyone – patients, visitors, contractors, vendors and employees. Employees were previously exempt per the department’s June 10th announcement, hence the filing of the grievance.
The American Federation of Government Employees, which represents hundreds of thousands of VA workers, remains firmly against the policy.
