Hemel Today reports that food banks are looking at providing free e-cigarette starter kits to smokers in Hertfordshire as part of a new research project.
The first of its kind would allow any smoker who is receiving assistance to qualify.
Director of Public Health at Hertfordshire County Council, Jim McManus, is helping push this project. Several food banks in the county have already offered to be part of the mission.
The project will be designed, run and evaluated by a UK university research team. It will target smokers who work in routine or manual jobs, those who receive low income, those with mental health conditions and pregnant women. All of these groups where found to have smoking rates much higher, per data collected in Hertfordshire county.
There are details to be worked past, including staying aligned with EU competition rules that will be resolved before launch.
