VC Star is reporting that the Ventura City Council has directed staff to prepare an ordinance to ban retailers from selling flavored tobacco and vape products. The ordinance also wants to add banning online sales, prohibiting new tobacco retail licenses from being issued within 1,000 feet of a school and ensuring current tobacco retail licenses within those zones would render nontransferable.
The policy was introduced last night by Mayor Matt LaVere and Council member Cheryl Heitmann, to which it received full support by the council.
Retailers expressed concern over the proposed bans and changes. Some had only learned about hours before Monday's meeting started. Several retailers state that no one from the tobacco industry was invited to weigh in on the situation in advance.
